What Happened at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center?

An investigation is still ongoing, but it has been concluded that on November 19, 2023, Fred Hutch detected unusual activity within its computer network. In late December, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center filed a notice of data breach after discovering that an unauthorized actor accessed certain segments of the organization’s IT network. Fred Hutch explains that the hackers may have been able to access names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, health insurance information, medical record numbers, patient account numbers, dates of service, treatment & diagnosis information, lab results, and provider names.

Fred Hutchinson is a cancer research institute based in Seattle, Washington, which includes the former Seattle Cancer Care Alliance. Fred Hutch conducts research and clinical trials, and treats many forms of cancer at eleven locations in and around Seattle, WA.

Previous Data Breach Notice

The latest security incident is just the latest; Fred Hutch was hit last year by a cyberattack on an email server. In October 2022, Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, now known as Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, began providing notice of a security incident involving certain individuals’ protected health information and personal information.

On March 26, 2022, the healthcare provider discovered that someone outside of Fred Hutchinson accessed an employee’s email account.
