SunBeam Crock Pot Express Recall & Burn Injury Risk

SunBeam, the parent company of Crock-Pot, is recalling almost a million units of their 6-Quart Express Crock Multi-Cookers due to an alleged burn hazard. About 914,430 Sunbeam crock pot express cookers, the majority of which have been sold in the United States, were manufactured between July 2017 and October 2018, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

The Crock-Pot 6-Quart Express Crock Multi-Cooker recall was initiated because the multi-cooker can pressurize when the lid is not fully locked, and may cause the lid to suddenly detach while the product is in use, posing burn risks to consumers.

SunBeam Products has thus far received at least 119 reports of lid detachment, and 99 burn injuries ranging in severity from first degree to third-degree burns, according to the CPSC. Consumers with the multi-cooker were advised to discontinue using the product in pressure cooker mode, but may be safe for slow cooking and sautéing use.

In a statement, Crock-Pot said: “All of our products are rigorously and routinely tested for consumer safety and are in full compliance with established industry standards. However, Crock-Pot has identified that the lids of select 6-Quart Express Crock Multi-Cookers can detach during use if not used in accordance with the owner’s manual.” Consumers may contact Crock-Pot and receive a free replacement lid with design changes that prohibit the cooker from starting unless the lid is properly locked.

SunBeam hopes the recall and changes in design will prevent consumers from using more liquid than recommended and improperly securing the crock pot lock before starting the device. Users are urged to be sure that the lid is securely turned to the locked position by aligning the arrow on the lid with the lock symbol on the cooker base.
