The Lyon Firm is currently investigating the Florida gastroenterology healthcare provider, Florida Digestive Health Specialists, due to a data breach that may have compromised the sensitive personal information of thousands of patients. Florida Digestive Health Specialists has begun notifying around 212,000 patients, alerting them of a data breach that impacted protected health information in a December 2020 cyber attack.

The letters from Florida Digestive Health Specialists explain that suspicious activity was detected on the company email server on December 16, 2020. The hacker allegedly sent emails from a company account after a phishing email made access possible. As a result, a fraudulent transfer of funds was made to an unknown bank account.

The Florida Digestive Health Specialists attack is thought to initiate fraudulent wire transfers but possible data theft is not being ruled out.

There has been a notable 12-month delay in issuing notification letters to affected patients, which privacy attorneys say is a breach of duty, on top of the security negligence.
