Florida Healthy Kids Data Breach

In one of the largest healthcare data breach incidents to date, affecting 3.5 million individuals, The Florida Healthy Kids Corporation announced the alleged theft of patients’ personal data.

The Florida Healthy Kids Corporation is a nonprofit that has expanded access to affordable, child-centered health insurance, ad offers comprehensive health and dental insurance for Florida children from age 5 through the end of age 18.

Late last year, Florida Healthy Kids reported that thousands of applicant addresses were inappropriately accessed, and they hired cybersecurity experts to investigate. The cybersecurity team identified vulnerabilities in the databases that support the online Florida KidCare application—vulnerabilities that spanned a seven-year period. The types of personal data that may have been compromised includes:

• Full Names and Dates of Birth
• Email Address and Telephone Number
• Physical Address and Mailing Address
• Social Security Numbers
• Financial Information
• Insurance Information

Data Theft Protection

Individuals who applied or enrolled with Florida KidCare coverage between 2013 and 2020 are encouraged to contact a data breach attorney and to immediately consider security measures, including:

• Sign up for fraud alerts—this is a free service offered by credit reporting agencies (Experian, Equifax and TransUnion) and requires creditors to contact an individual before a new account is opened.
• Security freezes—security freezes, also called credit freezes, prevent new accounts from being opened without a person’s permission. A security freeze may impact the ability to apply for new credit, however.
• Monitor finances –closely monitor credit card, bank, and credit agency reports for any unusual activity
