Data Breach

Professional Dental Alliance, a large network of dental practices affiliated with the North American Dental Group, has notified over a hundred thousand patients that some of their protected health information, stored in email accounts, may have been accessed by an unauthorized individual.

Professional Dental Alliance says the data breach occurred at North American Dental Management, and an investigation was launched to determine what personal data may have been stolen in the phishing scam. A review of the affected email accounts confirmed they contained the following:

• Names
• Addresses
• Email addresses
• Phone numbers
• Insurance information
• Social Security numbers
• Dental information
• Financial information

There is not yet evidence that victims’ protected health information has been stolen, but that is a distinct possibility with any data breach incident. The breach has been reported to the DHS’ Office for Civil Rights, and at least 125,760 patients are known to have had their protected health information exposed, including at the following practices:

• Professional Dental Alliance of Florida
• Professional Dental Alliance of Georgia
• Professional Dental Alliance of Illinois
• Professional Dental Alliance of Indiana
• Professional Dental Alliance of Massachusetts
• Professional Dental Alliance of Michigan
• Professional Dental Alliance of New York
• Professional Dental Alliance of Tennessee
• Professional Dental Alliance of Texas
