UNM Health has begun sending out data breach notification letters after discovering that an unauthorized third party gained access to its network, potentially compromising large amounts of patients’ personal data.
The security breach was allegedly discovered on June 4 and an investigation was launched to determine the full extent of the UNM data breach.
UNM Health has said in a statement that systems were accessed on May 2, 2021 by a hacker and patient files from UNM Hospital, UNM Medical Group and UNM Sandoval Regional Medical Center were potentially compromised. Leaked data may include the following:
- Names
- Addresses
- Dates of birth
- Medical record numbers
- Patient identification numbers
- Health insurance information
- Clinical information
- Social Security numbers
UNM Health started sending breach notification letters to individuals on August 3, 2021, and credit monitoring and identity theft protection services are being offered to those impacted with a Social Security number exposed.
The breach report submitted to the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office for Civil Rights reports that over 637,000 patients have been impacted by the breach, one of the largest healthcare data breaches so far in 2021, and the single largest data breach reported by a New Mexico healthcare organization.
