First American Financial Data Breach Investigation

The Lyon Firm is investigating a First American Financial data breach that may impact a large number of individuals. Hackers claim they have stolen a huge amount of data, and First American has confirmed they were the target of a late December cyberattack.

What Happened at First American?

First American Financial says a group of threat actors may have accessed and acquired company data. According to reports, the stolen data was later encrypted.

First American is the country’s second largest title insurance firm, and the firm is still investigating the attack. The type of data compromised and the number of individuals affected are still unknown.

“Though the incident is still under investigation, the Company believes the perpetrator of the activity accessed certain Company systems, exfiltrated data and encrypted data on certain non-production systems,” First American said in an 8-K form filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). “The Company continues to assess whether the incident will have a material impact on the Company’s financial condition or results of operations, which at this point cannot be determined.”

This is not the first IT security incident for the company. First American recently reached a settlement over a 2019 data breach that led to the data exposure of hundreds of millions of customers.

Data breach incidents targeting insurance firms are not uncommon these days. Fidelity National Financial, the nation’s largest title insurance firm, announced that it was hit by a ransomware attack in November 2023.
