What Happened at Rivers Casino?

On November 16, 2023, Rivers Casino Des Plaines posted a “Notice of Data Breach” on its website after learning that an unauthorized party had gained access to the company’s network. An investigation confirmed that the personal information of employees, customers, and online sportsbook customers may have been accessed and stolen in August 2023.

The Rivers Casino has begun contacting customers and employees that their personal information, including names, phone numbers, email addresses, mailing addresses, birth dates and driver’s license and/or ID numbers, Social Security numbers, tax ID numbers, bank account numbers and passport numbers may have been stolen in a recent IT security incident.

The data breach allegedly occurred in August 2023 but was only discovered in November. Rivers Casino has begun notifying employees and customers that hackers have stolen the above personal information.

The type of information varies by individual, and is more than enough for cybercriminals to commit financial fraud or identity theft. There is currently no information on who initiated the attack, or whether the hackers asked for a ransom.

The number of people potentially affected by the breach is also unknown but Rivers Casino Des Plaines gets millions of visitors per year. Rivers Casino operates five locations in Pittsburgh, PA; Philadelphia, PA; Des Plaines, IL; Portsmouth, VA; and Schenectady, NY.

If you receive a data breach notification from Midwest Gaming or Rivers Casino Des Plaines, it is important to understand that you may now be an increased risk of fraud and identity theft. Take immediate measures to secure your accounts and carefully monitor your finances.

Casinos have been a popular target for hackers in the last few months. This attack comes in the wake of the massive MGM and Caesars hacks. But unlike the ransomware attack that hit MGM Resorts, Rivers Casino did not have any interruptions in their day-to-day operations. Reports on more casino attacks are likely to be confirmed soon. The FBI issued a Private Industry Notification saying that bad actors are utilizing new trends to attack gambling establishments.
