Singing River Health System, a not-for-profit healthcare organization operating in the Mississippi Gulf Coast region, has reported that over 250,000 individuals may have been impacted by a hacking incident in August 2023.
The hospital says that a large amount of sensitive information was potentially compromised in a “malicious and sophisticated ransomware” cyberattack that took their network offline for several days last summer. The ransomware gang Rhysida claimed responsibility for the attack. According to reports, Rhysida has claimed nearly 50 organizations over the last year.
Singing River offers emergency services, vascular services, cancer care, women’s and children’s services, hospice and home care, behavioral health services, and other healthcare services. The Health System operates Singing River Hospital in Pascagoula, Singer River Gulfport, and Ocean Springs Hospital.
The type of patient information potentially compromised includes:
- Name
- Social Security number
- Date of birth
- Address
- Medical information
- Health insurance information
Hospital-related data theft incidents are on the rise, and millions of Americans now face the fallout from attacks on the healthcare system as a whole. When leaked or stolen, individual healthcare data can be sold on dark web forums, and may be used for fraud and medical identity theft, a type of fraud where threat actors use stolen information to submit forged claims to insurers.
Stolen personally identifiable information (PII) can be used to commit identity theft, open new credit accounts, make unauthorized purchases, or obtain loans.
It is critical to begin to take the next steps after a data breach targets your personal data. You may contact a data privacy lawyer to learn about how to protect your accounts, and how to file a class action data breach lawsuit. By filing a claim, you can recover compensation and hold any negligent party accountable for their action or inaction.
