The Lyon Firm is investigating data privacy cases linked to a large security incident at Tampa General Hospital. Call now to file a class action claim.
Tampa General Hospital has confirmed that hackers gained access to its IT network and obtained files containing the protected health information of over a million patients.
The security breach was detected on May 31, 2023, and the affected systems were allegedly taken offline to prevent further damage. A recent investigation confirmed that unauthorized individuals had access to its network for three weeks in May 2023. The hackers allegedly exfiltrated files containing sensitive patient information which may include the following:
- Phone numbers
- Dates of birth
- Social Security numbers
- Medical record numbers
- Patient account numbers
- Dates of service
- Health insurance information
- Treatment information
Tampa General Hospital said in a notice that this was an attempted ransomware attack. Additional security measures have been implemented to bolster its systems and prevent further attacks. Notification letters will be mailed to affected individuals.
Frequent healthcare hacks have left millions of patients nationwide vulnerable to stolen PPI and identity theft. Hundreds of hospitals and health insurance companies have reported medical record data breaches, and a patient’s financial information and personal information can easily be sold and used in nefarious ways.
With hospitals acquiring large amounts of electronic medical data, there are more and more healthcare data breach incidents and subsequent privacy class action lawsuits.
