Bayer Roundup Settlements & Future Cancer Claims

Bayer AG has reached another deal related to lawsuits filed over its controversial weedkiller, Roundup. The German company struck a $2 billion deal to resolve future toxic exposure claims. Plaintiffs have filed tens of thousands of lawsuits around the world, with allegations that Roundup caused cancer.
Under Bayer’s proposed settlement plan, $2 billion will be used to cover compensation for a four-year period. Individual plaintiffs could receive up to $200,000. Any plaintiff diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma who is not satisfied with the 200K and refrains from making a claim during the proposed four-year period would be able to file an individual lawsuit.
Ever since Bayer acquired Monsanto in 2018, the company has been swamped with Roundup litigation and settlement negotiations are ongoing. Class action plaintiffs have argued that Roundup and other glyphosate-based products directly causes non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Despite several safety reviews and studies published in global health publications, the company maintains that Roundup and glyphosate (the active chemical) are safe for human use.
The most recent settlement aims to cover future Roundup cancer claims brought by individual plaintiffs exposed to Roundup and later diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
Roundup has been the world’s most widely used herbicide for many years, and is still used regularly in residential capacities as well as large agricultural operations. Plaintiffs have included farmers, groundskeepers, custodians, nursery staff, landscapers and consumers who have used Roundup in their lawn and garden.
Glyphosate has been a source of litigation after several studies questioned its safety on the long-term effect of individual health, and has been linked to an increased risk of developing certain types of cancer. Yet, the products are still popular for their effectiveness and sales have remained robust.
In June 2020, Bayer reached a $9.6 billion settlement in attempt to resolve the majority of more than 100,000 Roundup lawsuits filed in the United States.
