What Happened at AutoZone?

On November 21, 2023, AutoZone, Inc. filed a notice of data breach after discovering that a ransomware group may have accessed a large number of files that could have compromised as many as 185,000 individuals.

The company, like thousands of others, used MOVEit, a file-transfer program, which was targeted in a ransomware attack in May 2023. AutoZone has concluded that the incident resulted in the hackers being able to access consumers’ sensitive information, including names and Social Security numbers.

If you receive a data breach notification from AutoZone, Inc., it is important to understand what the risks, and begin to take certain measures to protect yourself from fraud and identity theft. The leak of a Social Security number is especially perilous, as cybercriminals can use it to engage in a number of fraudulent schemes.

The data allegedly stolen by the cybercriminals is roughly 1.1GB in size, containing employee names, email addresses, parts supply details, tax information, payroll documents, Oracle database files, data about stores, production and sales information.

The MOVEit transfer attack occurred in May 2023, so why did it take so long for AutoZone to begin contacting impacted customers and employees? Our firm is investigating the delay in notice on behalf of victims in all fifty states. Contact us to learn more about data breach class action lawsuits and possible legal action.
