What Happened at City of Hope?

According to sources, on October 13, 2023, City of Hope detected suspicious activity on its computer network and immediately contacted a cybersecurity firm to investigate.

On December 14, 2023, City of Hope provided initial notice of the breach, but had not yet compiled a full list of those impacted. On April 2, 2024, City of Hope began sending out data breach notification letters to hundreds of thousands of affected patients, and filed a notice of data breach with the Attorney General of Maine after discovering that an “unauthorized party” had accessed and stole files on their networks.

The leaked files allegedly contained confidential consumer information, that could include the following:

  • Name
  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Driver’s license or other government ID
  • Financial account details
  • Health insurance information
  • Medical record number
  • Medical information

In the notice sent to individuals, City of Hope explained that management recently discovered that it had experienced a data breach in which PII and PHI (protected health information) in its possession may have been accessed and acquired by bad actors. After an investigation, they determined with the help of cybersecurity professionals that the data theft occurred between September 19, 2023, and October 12, 2023.

Can I File a Class Action Data Breach Lawsuit?

If any entity collects and stores your personal data but fails to properly protect it with reasonably secure networks, they may be held liable for a preventable data breach incident. We believe that any organization that keep your data on file has a duty to keep it safe, and if they are hacked, they may be held accountable. We have filed numerous data breach lawsuits nationwide, and legal action may be your best course of action to get compensated for any losses.

The City of Hope data breach was only recently announced to the public and more details about the event should emerge as our attorneys investigate further. We do know that the cancer center has lost a great deal of data, and the next step will be to protect any impacted individuals from the threat of future fraud and medical identity theft.

If you received a data breach notification from City of Hope, or another healthcare entity, you may consider filing a claim to recover damages and to hold them accountable for their negligence. It is critical to understand what is now at risk, and to take certain measures to mitigate your losses now and in the future.
