On April 16, 2026, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced a recall involving portable generators manufactured by Generac Power Systems, affecting approximately 149,400 units sold across the United States.

The issue that was discovered is a potential fuel leak that can occur in the carburetor when the generator is first filled with gasoline. During this initial fueling process, gasoline may escape from the system, creating a risk of fire.
The recall includes several widely used models such as the GP3600, GP4000DF, GP6500 series, GP8000E, GP9200E, and GP9500ETF, sold nationwide through major retailers and online platforms between May 2025 and February 2026. Most units feature an orange and black design with a steel frame.
At the time the recall was announced, regulators had received 114 reports of fuel leaks. No injuries had been confirmed but the defect was classified as posing a risk of serious injury or death, which prompted immediate action.
Consumers who own one of these generators should stop using the unit if it has not yet been fueled or if any leakage is observed. The manufacturer is offering repairs rather than replacements or refunds.
If injuries are reported, affected consumers have concrete grounds to pursue product liability claims with allegations of defective design or failure to provide sufficient warnings about the risks associated with fueling the generator.
Many people assume that a recall without injuries is less serious, but that is not necessarily the case. In fact, recalls issued before widespread injuries occur are often intended to prevent exactly that outcome.
