A 2023 data breach at Welltok impacted the personal information many Premier Health patients, leading victims to take legal action against the responsible parties to recover compensation for related damages. Plaintiffs have alleged the company failed to properly secure patient data and neglected their IT security which resulted in the data theft incident.

What Happened at Premier Health?
Welltok, a company that creates software for health care institutions to share information with patients, alerted many of its clients in November 2023 about a data breach that took place over the summer. Welltok first learned of the compromise of their MOVEit Transfer server on July 26, 2023, when an unknown actor exploited software vulnerabilities on the MOVEit platform.
Welltok provided notice to many individuals on behalf of Premier Health about the data security event. On July 12, 2023, Premier Health says they became aware of suspicious activity on their network. They launched an investigation and later determined that files on certain Premier Health systems were accessed and stolen between June 7, 2023 and July 12, 2023.
In a statement, the company noted, “For a small group of impacted clients, Social Security Numbers, Medicare/Medicaid ID Numbers, or certain Health Insurance information such as plan or group name, were also implicated. For other individuals, certain health information such as a provider name, prescription name, or treatment code may have been included.”
Multiple health care organizations have been hit by the Welltok breach, with more than 8.4 million people impacted, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
