What Happened at Stanford University?

Stanford is sending data breach notification letters to thousands of individuals who may have been affected by a data security incident involving the Stanford Department of Public Safety.

On Sept. 27, 2023, the Department of Public Safety discovered that it was targeted in a ransomware attack. An ensuing data security investigation determined that an unauthorized individual or group accessed the Department of Public Safety’s network between May 12, 2023, and Sept. 27, 2023. The school has noted that cyberattack does not involve any Stanford systems other than the network used by the Department of Public Safety.

Reports suggest at least 27,000 individuals may have had their personal data compromised.

What Information was Leaked by the Stanford Department of Public Safety?

Stanford University has begun sending out data breach notification letters, and has noted that the recent data breach involves the following sensitive confidential information:

  • Full Name
  • Social Security Number

This is not the first attack at Stanford. In the last few years, there have been other egregious privacy violations and data security incidents.

In 2023, a separate attack at Stanford may have compromised the personal information that could have included date of birth, government ID, passport number, driver’s license number, and other information the Department of Public Safety may have collected in its operations.

For a small number of individuals, this information may also have included biometric data, health/medical information, email address with password, username with password, security questions and answers, digital signature, and credit card information with security codes.

It is important to take certain measures to protect your personal information following a data breach incident. If you or a loved one has received notice of a breach, it is prudent to stay vigilant, and to contact a legal professional to consider filing a claim.
