What Happened at Texas Life Insurance?

Tens of millions of consumers worldwide were impacted in the MOVEit file transfer attack. In May 2023, the Clop ransomware gang started abusing a zero-day exploit of Progress Software’s MOVEit file transfer tool. Progress quickly issued a security patch, but it was much too late to limit the damage. The attack ended up impacted thousands of organizations, including many insurance companies like Texas Life Insurance.

According to one report, over 2,600 organizations have reported being attacked, and over 94 million people with their personal information at risk. The majority of attacks were on US-based entities, with the American public now at greater identity theft and fraud risk.

In the aftermath of the attack, Progress issued two more security patches on June 9 and June 15 to address additional vulnerabilities.

The Lyon Firm and other firms have been busy filing class action lawsuits on behalf of victims and plaintiffs nationwide. The MOVEit breach and other similar attacks last year led to the SEC to require public companies to issue disclosures within four days of discovering a cybersecurity incident.

Companies must disclose any cybersecurity incidents on a Form 8-K filing, documents that typically inform shareholders about major changes to the company. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) also published a joint Cybersecurity Advisory (CSA) with recommended actions to help protect against and reduce impact from CL0P Ransomware Gang exploiting MOVEit vulnerability.
