Investigating UC San Diego Health phishing attack claims
UC San Diego Health has announced a data breach that may impact thousands of patients, students, and staff members’ Protected Health Information (PHI). Victims are urged to remain vigilant and to contact a legal professional to learn more about protecting data and preventing medical identity theft in the future.
On March 8, 2024, UC San Diego Health (UCSD Health) filed a notice of data breach with the Attorney General of California after discovering an email phishing attack that gave an unauthorized party access to email accounts.
Phishing occurs when an email is sent that looks like it is from a trustworthy source, but it is a cybercriminal attempting to steal data for various reasons. A phishing email misleads a recipient to share or provide access to their email login credentials.
In their notice sent to individuals, UCSD Health says the following could have been compromised: names, Social Security numbers, mailing addresses, email addresses, dates of birth, medical record numbers, health insurance information, treatment cost information, and medical information.
Upon completing an initial investigation, UC San Diego Health began sending out data breach notification letters to all individuals whose information may have been affected by the data security incident.
If you receive a data breach notification from UC San Diego Health or another healthcare entity, it is important understand what is at risk now and in the future. A data breach lawyer can help you learn more about the incident, and what the legal process may look like if you decide to file a class action claim.
According to their website, UC San Diego Health learned that an unauthorized party accessed certain employee email accounts between January 9, 2024 and January 22, 2024.
On March 8, 2024, UC San Diego Health sent out data breach letters to anyone who was affected by the incident. These letters should provide victims with more details, and a full list of what information was compromised.
