Maremont Corporation manufactured and supplied after-market automotive parts to various retailers. Up until 1978, Maremont allegedly added asbestos to several of its muffler and exhaust products for fireproofing. As a result, many workers at Maremont plants and those who handled their products after they were sold could have been exposed to a hazardous level of toxic material.
Their automotive products included asbestos-containing brake linings, disc pads, mufflers and clutch facings sold under the brands “Pratt,” “Grizzly” and “Leland.” Maremont also supplied asbestos brakes to Sears, Roebuck & Company.
In 1977, Maremont sold its asbestos friction business to Nuturn Corporation, another automotive parts manufacturer, and discontinued making their toxic asbestos mufflers in 1978.
Maremont has faced hundreds of lawsuits since from former workers in the industry that claim the company knew, or should have known, that their products were hazardous to the health of anyone handling them. As a result, Maremont filed for bankruptcy in 2019 and an asbestos trust has since been created to compensate future victims. Automotive store employees, mechanics, and plant workers have filed claims.
Many companies in the auto industry used asbestos in components, which resulted in many workers later developing mesothelioma, asbestosis, lung cancer and other related cancers such as the following:
The U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the EPA, OSHA and other health and safety agencies worldwide have concluded that there is no safe level of exposure to asbestos. Even a short duration of exposure during employment, particularly in a poorly ventilated area, could result in a worker developing an occupational illness.
Mesothelioma is a specific form of lung cancer that has been linked to asbestos exposure in medical literature since the 1970s. The cancer has a long latency period, and sometimes a worker will not show symptoms of the cancer for decades after initial exposure. If you a confirmed diagnosis in the last year, you may be eligible to file an asbestos cancer claim. You should contact an experienced toxic exposure lawyer to discuss your legal options and to begin processing your claim.

Any individual who handled Maremont exhaust or brake products and later developed cancer may have a viable case. Asbestos claims have a high rate of success if they are filed shortly after a diagnosis is linked to past workplace toxic exposure.

Asbestos fibers break down with use, and can be inhaled or ingested by workers or consumers. The fiber lodge themselves in soft tissue and can lay dormant for many years before later developing into a cancer.
Primarily their brake and exhaust products that were sold across the country and to other manufacturers and retailers.
Like many others in the auto industry, they used asbestos because it was widely available as an insulator, it was cheap, durable, fire-resistant and light, and was thought to be the perfect material for brake pads and other auto parts.
Public health officials say each year hundreds of auto plant workers and aftermarket mechanics are still diagnosed with occupational lung diseases. A warning published by the Automotive Safety Association found that approximately 1 in 10 mechanics at auto repair shops could be at risk for developing an asbestos-related cancer.
Since repair shops also are often short on air circulation, the combination enclosed work spaces and free-floating asbestos fibers makes the occupation particularly dangerous. Auto workers can contact The Lyon Firm for more information on their risk factors.
Reports from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) advise mechanics to “assume that all brakes have asbestos-type shoes.” They go on to say it is impossible to know if brake or clutch components contain asbestos by visual inspection. The danger to mechanics will continue for decades as asbestos-filled brakes on warehouse shelves continue to be installed on vehicles.
