Genesis Healthcare Data Breach Investigation

Kern Psychiatric Health and Wellness Center in Bakersfield is letting patients know about a data breach. The breach actually happened at Genesis Healthcare Management, the outside company that handles their billing and administrative work, but the fact remains that patients could be impacted.

Genesis first spotted something unusual on June 22, 2026 and brought in an outside cybersecurity team and an investigation confirmed that someone unauthorized had accessed certain files on their network. Because Genesis stores patient information for Kern Psychiatric, those records got caught up in it even though the practice’s own computers were never touched.

What actually got exposed varies from person to person. For some it might just be a name and date of birth. For others it could include Social Security numbers, driver’s license or government ID numbers, diagnosis and treatment records, prescription details, medical record and account numbers, Medicare or Medicaid IDs, lab results, and insurance information.

Kern Psychiatric reported the incident to the California Attorney General on August 21. They’re offering twelve months of free credit monitoring and identity protection through Cyberscout, and they’ve set up a phone line for patients who have questions.
