On October 7, 2026, the threat monitoring site HookPhish reported that the Interlock ransomware group named Riviera Healthcare Center as a victim. Riviera, a California skilled nursing facility, has not confirmed a breach. The facility has not publicly acknowledged an incident or sent notification letters, but patients and staff should remain vigilant. The watchdog report says the information allegedly breached could include patient names, diagnoses, medical histories, treatment and fall or fracture records, payment details, and employee human resources files. Those personal health categories reflect allegations from a third party. Nobody has verified what data, if any, an unauthorized party accessed, or how many people it may affect.

Interlock first surfaced in September 2024. In July 2025, the FBI, CISA, HHS, and MS-ISAC issued a joint advisory stating that the group uses a double extortion model. Its operators encrypt systems and threaten to publish the stolen files unless the victim pays. The advisory identifies healthcare as a frequent target. A ransomware group's claim does not prove an attack succeeded, but it gives patients and employees reason to stay alert.

If a breach occurred, HIPAA requires covered entities to notify affected individuals without unreasonable delay and no later than 60 days after discovery. State privacy laws may add duties. Whether a provider took reasonable steps to protect patient information is a question for investigation and possibly litigation.

Patients and employees can begin to take certain precautions now. Watch your mail for a notice, review insurance statements and bank accounts for unfamiliar activity, and consider a credit freeze.
