Saber Healthcare Data Breach Investigation

Saber Healthcare Group has disclosed a data breach involving sensitive personal and medical information after an unauthorized party accessed the company's corporate computer network in July 2026. The incident potentially exposed Social Security numbers, financial information, medical records and government identification numbers.

According to a September 25 notice, the Beachwood, Ohio-based healthcare provider discovered a computer systems outage on July 27. An investigation determined that an outside party had accessed its corporate network and encrypted a portion of its files, disrupting operations.

Saber said it restored the affected files within 24 to 48 hours using unaffected backups. The company also emphasized that its electronic medical record system, maintained by an outside provider, was not affected. Investigators found no evidence that the medical records database had been accessed or copied.

However, the investigation identified files that may have contained sensitive information belonging to individuals associated with the company. Depending on the person, the exposed information could include names, dates of birth, driver's license numbers, health insurance information, medical information, financial account details, passport numbers and Social Security numbers.

Saber completed its review of potentially affected files on August 19 and began locating individuals to provide direct notification. The company is offering affected individuals complimentary credit monitoring and identity protection services.

The company has not publicly disclosed the total number of individuals affected in its initial notice. It said it has implemented additional security measures and has not detected further unauthorized activity.

The incident raises concerns about the protection of sensitive information held by healthcare organizations. Even when medical records remain secure, exposure of Social Security numbers and financial information can create risks of identity theft and fraud.
