In April 2021, around 189,460 veterans medical records were publicly exposed on a database, following a ransomware attack targeting a vendor working for the Veterans Administration. The medical information related to military veterans contained patient, physician, employee data and other highly sensitive information.

The attack included a Ransomware message that claimed all of the veterans medical records were downloaded and they would be leaked unless 0.15 Bitcoin ($8,148 USD) was paid to hackers. The database in question allegedly contained the following:

  • Patient names
  • Date of birth
  • Reason for doctor’s visit
  • Medical record number
  • Email and phone numbers
  • Billing and invoicing information

It is unclear if the veterans medical records data breach was reported to the individuals affects, or how long this data was publicly accessible. Medical records are some of the most valuable types of data on the black market, and can sell for as much as $250 per record.
