Investigating toxic exposure at Edwards AFB
The Mesothelioma Lawyers at The Lyon Firm are reviewing claims of asbestos-related cancer and lung diseases, linked to past service at Edwards Air Force Base in California. Many air force bases and other military installations around the U.S. had toxic materials on site for decades, putting thousands of servicemen and civilian contractors at risk of later developing a serious illness.

Edwards Air Force Base, like many other military bases around the nation, was built long before experts knew the serious health risks of asbestos exposure. As a result, many military vehicles and aircraft were constructed with the material on some critical components. Asbestos was abundant and cheap and was believed to be the perfect insulator for gaskets, seals, brake linings, adhesives and other applications because of its natural durability and heat-resistant properties.
The air force also used asbestos in the construction of barracks and other buildings on site, placing service members at risk for serious asbestos-related diseases. Not until the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) identified asbestos as the direct cause of asbestosis, mesothelioma, and other cancers did the Defense Department discontinue its use of asbestos-containing materials for the following:
Asbestos-related cancers and diseases like asbestosis, mesothelioma, lung cancer and other chronic lung diseases can have very long latency periods, meaning that a servicemember could have been exposed to asbestos in the 1970s and only recently receive a definitive cancer diagnosis. It can take decades for the carcinogenic material to create enough inflammation for victims to begin to exhibit symptoms of a serious lung condition. Individuals at Edwards and other Air Force bases who were most at risk of toxic exposure include the following:
Located in San Bernardino County, California, Edwards Air Force Base started as a bombing range and training base, and developed into one of the more important military bases in California. Edwards Air Force Base still conducts planning, conducting, analyzing, and reporting on flight and ground testing aircraft, weapons systems, software, and components, as well as modeling and simulation for the U.S. Air Force. Much of the new Air Force aircraft is tested at Edwards AFB, as well as many aircraft designed for the Navy and Army.
